Fake it til you make it
Commonly heard advice is to “fake it til you make it” in order to get ahead in life. I appreciate there are benefits to this approach but have never felt great about this concept. It seems dishonest and delusional.
Being Honest
Being honest is admirable. Sometimes in the spirit of honesty though it’s easy to shortchange ourselves and not take enough credit for what we’ve done or what we’re capable of doing.
The AND
Instead of entirely “faking it”, be taking steps towards what your goal is, which solidifies your own belief about your identity being someone who “is making it”. Envision yourself as someone who exercises (don’t try to convince yourself you have a six pack when you don’t) and embrace a habit of exercising daily. When you say “I’m someone that works out consistently” it’s true. One day the six pack will come as a result.
