I’m reading Atomic Habits by James Clear and in it he talks about designing your environment to suit your goals. This seems obvious but how many of us actually do it? If we want to eat healthy, do we have fruit on our table or snacks and treats? If we want to drink less, is the beer in the front of the fridge or the back?
I’ve gotten back into reading and journaling recently, and leaving the book and journal out in obvious places instead of putting them away does wonders for making it easy to stay consistent. It’s exciting, really, to think that we can stack the odds in our favor by intentionally setting our environment up for the life we want to live. The actions we take will inform our belief in ourselves and identity – why wouldn’t we set ourselves up for success?
In the beginning of the book he challenges readers to write down all of their habits, granularly going through their day (brush teeth, drink a glass of water, etc.). A current habits list and designed habits list are worth creating. If we come up with our desired habits and consistently implement them, however small, our lives will be transformed.
