Standards versus goals

My first encounter with Ed Mylett‘s work was through his first appearance on the BiggerPockets podcast. He delivered a great message that “you get your standards, not your goals long term” which stuck with me.

Goals are what you want to do – standards are who you want to be. They are linked to your identity. Goals are still great to have, but are shorter term. Standards should be the base upon which your goals are built.

My standards are listed below. What are yours? Take the time to write them out, and more importantly, commit to living them out.

My standards:

  • I follow through with my commitments
  • I provide security and abundance to my family
  • I’m early
  • I show (and tell) my wife and kids I love them
  • I eat healthy and exercise
  • I give
