When addressing a process that needs improvement I typically take one of the app approaches.
- Incrementally improve the process one step at a time
- Start from scratch and completely overhaul the process
Which approach is chosen is very important. The appropriate option is context dependent. Do you have a functioning process that just needs a little help? Or something that is so broken that it’s better to just look at fresh? Reinventing the wheel isn’t easy, so you want to be sure if you take option number two. You can also spend an exorbitant amount of time incrementally improving, or fixing something that would have been easier to just completely redo.
The conclusion? Thoughtfully (but quickly) assessing the process pays off. Then you make an informed decision and are off to the races.
Never stop improving.
